Bugema University

Welcome to Bugema University a Seventhday Adventist Institution in Uganda!

We are excited to open our doors to you and share the unique experience that define our institution. Choosing a university is a major step in life, and we are honored that you are taking the time to learn about us. Our university is not only a place for learning but also a community where values, knowledge, and skills come together to shape a brighter future.

Here, we believe in the balanced growth of the whole person—developing the Head for intellectual excellence, the Heart for moral and spiritual strength, and the Hand for practical skills and service. This philosophy guides every program, activity, and opportunity we provide. From our classrooms and research centers to our cultural and social engagements, you will find an environment that encourages discovery, creativity, and personal growth.

Our History

Bugema University began in 1948 as Bugema Missionary Training School, training teachers and pastors for the Seventh-day Adventist Church in East Africa. It later became Bugema Missionary College and then Bugema Adventist College, offering a BTh degree in 1976.

After President Idi Amin banned the Seventh-day Adventist Church in 1977, the program temporarily moved to Nairobi, where the first BTh graduates completed their studies in 1978. The college later relocated to Watamu, then it returned to Bugema, and expanded curricula to include Business and Education. In 1994, it became a university and received a tertiary institution license in 1997.
