Students at Bugema University’s Main Campus have been introduced to cloud computing and the learning pathways that can lead them into one of the fastest-growing areas of the technology industry.
The AWS Student Builder Group at Bugema University, Kampala Campus, on Wednesday, 23rd September 2026, held a session dubbed “AWS Cloud Foundations & Learning Pathways” in partnership with the Department of Information Technology. The three-hour session ran from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
The event was aimed at helping students understand Amazon Web Services (AWS), one of the world’s leading cloud computing platforms, and how they can build skills that are increasingly sought after by employers.
Cloud computing allows organisations to store data, run applications and deliver services over the internet instead of relying only on their own computers and servers. It now supports much of everyday technology, including mobile apps, online banking and e-commerce.
During the session, students were taken through the basics of cloud computing and the core services offered by AWS, including computing, storage, databases and networking. Facilitators explained how these services work together to run the digital systems people use daily.
Participants were also introduced to AWS Skill Builder, an online platform that offers free courses, practical labs, and learning plans. Students were shown how to create accounts and use the platform to learn at their own pace.
Another part of the session focused on AWS certifications, which range from the entry-level Cloud Practitioner to more advanced associate and professional levels. Facilitators said certifications can help students prove their skills to employers and improve their chances of getting internships and jobs, both locally and internationally. The session ended with games and a quiz where students tested what they learned during the morning.
Organisers said the event was part of efforts to make cloud skills more accessible to students, many of whom may not have had the chance to learn about the field nearly.
The event points to how student-led groups can support classroom learning by linking students to global technology skills and resources.
For the organisers, the focus is on showing students that careers in cloud computing are within their reach, and that the tools to get started are already available online.
